Wants vs. needs

Vote NO on the Hamtramck School Bond and save our First Responders.

During this uncertain time of COVID 19, many of us have had to decide between our wants and our needs. Local cities and governments around the state and nation are forced to review their budgets. The City of Hamtramck is no different. Hamtramck NEEDS to raise taxes to secure our First Responders’ (Police and Fire pension costs ) to maintain it’s current level of service. Detroit has a hard enough time policing their own community, imagine if the city services were combined?

Hamtramck Public School WANTS to raise taxes to build a new school, add air conditioning and maintain and upgrade their current facilities. The Hamtramck Public Schools are operating with a surplus (thanks to Thomas Niczay’s, former Superintendent, diligence in budget and cost control) and will be able to continue operations if they do not pass their bond. The City will go bankrupt or lose the vital protection of our First Responders if they do not pass their millage request.

Hamtramck School Bond

What is at stake:

Higher taxes without a solid plan for recovery.

KEY ISSUES:

Raise In Taxes - Uncertain times

The City of Hamtramck is suffering a massive blow from the COVID-19 pandemic that will take many concessions or consolidations to fix before recovery.

Income Tax base and projections should be speculative or cautious at best.

Our front line first responders in Hamtramck are suffering with the risk of losing all benefits and jobs possibly. The city needs to be safe first, right?

Speculative Projections?

The School Administration cannot guarantee the traditional learning path will take place this fall let along next year at this time.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has already published their COVID-19 Guidance for Schools, Workplaces and Community Locations.

In this document, the CDC has recommended and authored several protocols that create substantial changes to daily operations that will impact the District's budget for health and safety. Just a few of these items could include per the CDC are: (1) Lunch now served in classrooms, (2) Desks spaced 6' apart where possible or splash guards installed in between students, (3) students seated in busses: one child per seat with possible skipping rows. These changes to operations are necessary and far outweigh the benefit of fixing lockers, painting and remodeling bathrooms or adding air conditioning.

Building Infrastructure

Some of the buildings are 100 years old or more. Some are approaching 100. The School Board has outlined air-conditioning, and other building add-ons that Hamtramck students have excelled without for decades. What they aren't telling you is they continue to fall short and delay the fixing of - Health and Safety items:  Mold, Bed-Bugs and falling plaster.  How about they get a true inspection for infrastructure before central office puts together their wish-list for voters?

Didn't the the residents just a few years a go pass a sinking fund that was supposed to cover all of these repairs? If buildings were maintained annually, many of these issues would not be catastrophes now.  It's time for answers!

Top Leader Promotes Charter Schools

Some may question the motives and  background data put into this bond proposal. Why is the Superintendent pushing so hard to promote this when the stakes are so high? Many factors are at stake this fall, or will charters prevail? Maybe the top boss knows...  Superintendent Jaleelah Hassan Ahmed actually owns "Zachary Educational Consulting Services LLC" an consulting firm run out of her home where she is the organizer and agent.  Here is their mission:

"To provide educational consultation services is starting charter/private schools, data analysis, professional developments, school improvements, instructional coaching, curriculum development, and character education presentations for schools and social programs."

"To provide educational consultation services in starting charter/private schools...." Was she the right pick for our public school system?
